Wind Turbines for Homes Fail To Meet Expectations

How many times have you heard the claim that a micro-turbine will be able to provide 30 percent of a household's electricity needs? These micro-turbines were created for home use, especially in urban areas where little space is available to people. Unfortunately, if we base our judgment on a recent British study, it seems these micro-turbines fail to meet people's expectations.

A survey conducted by Encraft shows that micro-turbines can only generate around five (as opposed to the promised 30) percent of a house's energy requirements. That translates to an average of 214 watt hours per day; power enough only for four low-power light bulbs. The poor performance, however, is attributed to the usual obstructions in crowded locations like adjacent buildings. But, since obstructions are a condition people usually come across in urban areas, the surveyors came to the conclusion that those who did get micro-turbines installed one their houses are "poorly advised."

It seems the micro-turbines do well when installed on tall buildings - but then again, average houses aren't built as big. According to Alex Murley of the British Wind Energy Association though, in the right location, the micro-turbines can generate an average of 10 percent of a household's needs.
